Source characterization of full-scale jet noise using acoustic intensity

چکیده
Vector acoustic intensity provides both the direction and magnitude of energy flow at the probe location and is, hence, more informative than acoustic pressure measurements. However, this important quantity has seen little application previously in aeroacoustics. In the present work, an intensity probe, consisting of four microphones, captured the radiated field to the sideline and aft of a tethered, full-scale military jet aircraft as one engine was operated at multiple engine conditions. Data from each probe location provide a frequency-dependent map of the sound flow near the aircraft. The vector acoustic intensity is estimated using a recently developed processing technique that extends the upperfrequency limit of the traditional cross-spectrum-based calculations. The dominant intensity vectors are traced back to the jet centerline as a method of approximating the extent and location of the source region as a function of frequency. As expected for jet mixing noise sources, the resulting source region estimates contract and move upstream with increasing frequency. A comparison of estimated source regions and intensity directionalities between military and afterburner engine conditions reveals important distinctions in the sound fields. © 2015 Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Phased-array measurements of full-scale military jet noise
Beamforming techniques for aeroacoustics applications have undergone significant advances over the past decade to account for difficulties that arise when traditional methods are applied to distributed sources such as those found in jet noise. Nevertheless, successful source reconstructions depend on array geometry and the assumed source model. The application of phased-array algorithms to grou...
متن کاملCharacterization of rocket and jet noise using near-field acoustic holography methods
As rockets and jets on military aircraft become more powerful, the noise they produce can lead to structural fatigue, hearing damage, and community disturbances. Noise-reduction technologies and sound radiation prediction require accurate characterization of the noise sources within rocket plumes and jets. Near-field acoustical holography techniques were used to visualize the sound field in the...

Near-field acoustical holography has been shown to be a useful tool for visualizing jet noise fields. It has been applied to a full-scale jet on an installed military aircraft with promising results, but the source characteristics in the extreme near field have been difficult to characterize because of the interference of acoustic reflections off the rigid reflecting plane beneath the jet. To p...

Military jet aircraft are exposing both ground maintenance personnel and the community to high levels of noise. The US Department of Defense is funding research to develop advanced modeling tools for noise reduction techniques and community noise exposure. For these tools to achieve their full potential, innovative measurement and analysis methods are necessary to characterize the jet noise sou...
متن کاملModeling Jet Noise from Organized Structures Using Near-Field Hydrodynamic Pressure
A wave-packet ansatz is used to model noise generation by organized, large-scale structures. The spectrum of the acoustic field is expressed in terms of two-point space-time correlations of hydrodynamic pressure on a conical surface surrounding the jet plume. The surface is sufficiently near the turbulent flow region to be dominated by hydrodynamic disturbances, yet sufficiently far that the wa...
